Ever wondered why NYC is full of steam in the winter?

 

ConEd owns and controls those orange steam pipes we see all over NYC and it's tall skyscrapers. It's a sustainable solution that has lasted for ages since the 1800s and will probably continue. Better to have steam technology as opposed to individual boilers. I am curious though what the advancement of this steam technology would look like?
